It’s a Flat World After All

On April 3,2005, I read a New York Times Sunday Magazine article entitled “It’s a Flat World After All” by Thomas Friedman. I was so impressed with the ideas and thoughts that were expressed that I immediately emailed this article to all the members of the Board of Directors of the AAE. The rest is history and since this article and following book we have opened our eyes to agree that the world is truly flat.

I am in Turkey and will eventually wind my way to Greece. I attended and presented to the Turkish Endodontic Society and will represent the AAE at the International Federation of Endodontic Associations. My lecture in each of these locations was entitled “Thirty Years in Retrospect.”

After talking with our international colleagues, my lecture should really focus on the changing world of endodontics in the last 30 years. We all speak the same language whether it is about biology, pathology, microbiology, instruments, patients or obturation. Even some of the pharmacology terms are similar although drugs in other countries do seem very “foreign.” We are the same in our approach. When you listen to the research and clinical presentations it is seemless no matter what the speakers nationality. For a teacher and second generation endodontist, I can only rejoice that we can share and talk about the same subject at the same level. At one table during dinner, there was an Egyptian, an Israeli, an Iranian, an Iraqi and an American talking endodontics. Wouldn’t it be great if politics operated at this level?

Thirty years in restrospect has shown me that indeed the world is truly flat.
